When am I being a Death Midwife - Death Midwifery Website.jpg

As a trained Death Midwife and Ordained Minister I have officiated several home funerals and body honoring ceremonies where burial shrouds were used as the final embrace of the Beloved dead. At times, given the opportunity to plan, I have sewn fabric shrouds in favorite colors or even purchased a large sheet to wrap the body in.

Recently I've been inspired to do more. My desire to create hand-crafted and painted shrouds and burial blankets is balanced by the necessity to guarantee impermanence by using all natural and biodegradable products.

Of course, the creative process, which begins with a spark of inspiration, changes me. The Beauty of impermanence seeps into my bones and I realize how challenging it can be to release our attachment to what we create - which is deeply connected to how we see ourselves and how we want to be remembered. That in itself is a definition of death work.

There are layers of learning. Large-format work brings unique challenges and fortunately, I have a personal history of contemplating the importance of what and how I create. In my video Imagining Beauty, I reflect, "Will what I create matter? When I bring that which flows from my imagination into form, will it improve the world, touch a life, or inspire others?"

Nowadays, I answer my questions by saying yes, it matters deeply. In my capacity to create a form that becomes completely formless and unseen, I make the world better, touch lives, and hopefully, inspire others.

Burial shrouds can be used in green burials, cremations, and traditional burials. They are first and foremost, a way to honor the body of the dead. I use natural fabrics and organic milk-based paints. I also recycle and ethically source materials whenever possible.

Shrouds can be custom designed, incorporating size adjustments, artwork, vintage or personal fabrics specifically aligned with the wishes or needs of the dead or their family. These custom creations may take 4 - 6 weeks to make so pre-planning is essential.

We do have an ever-changing inventory on hand. Prices for full size shrouds range from $400 - $600.

Hold me, hold me, never let me go......

The fabric of this shroud is natural unbleached muslin and is washed prior to painting.

Like any piece of art created with water-based paint, it cannot be washed or steamed. 100% biodegradable milk paints and natural pigments are used to create the words and images in compliance with the intention and guidelines for green burials.

The lyrics on this shroud appear with the permission of the author Nina Wise.

Hold me, hold me, never let me go.

Hold me like the leaves on the ends of the branches.

And when I die let me fly, let me fly.

Through the air like the leaves when they're falling.

Hold me, hold me, never let me go.

Hold me like the stars in the sky high above me.

And when I die let me fly, let me fly.

Through the air like the stars when they're falling.

The words are designed to wrap the body from their left side. A suggestion for the ceremonial honoring is that the body be wrapped counter clockwise:  left side, feet, right side, head.
