I wrote this piece more than a decade ago. Today, I am again resolved to continue the work that needs to be done.
Few of us have experienced the passage from Maiden to Mother to Crone as a sacred and honored journey. The onset of our menses is often surrounded by embarrassment, lack of information, secrecy, feeling dirty or shameful. First blood is viewed as “the beginning of the woman’s curse” and an inconvenience that we must tolerate throughout our childbearing years. Then as the flow ceases, even greater fear is experienced as we no longer feel “fully functional” as women…growing invisible in a society that does not recognize the life value and beauty of the elder woman.
How many of us knew that for thousands of years prior to the current era, cultures all over the planet proclaimed the first face of the Divine to be feminine because our bodies flowed in rhythm with the cycles of the moon. It was honored that we nurtured the seeds of life and creativity within our wombs until they were mature to spring forth, just as the Mother Earth nurtures all of life that springs forth from her body. It was understood that when the time came that we no longer flowed with the cycles of the moon we held that pool of wisdom deep within us as the “Crone”…the wise and respected woman of the tribe.
The inherent ability to create was seen as uniquely feminine. The Goddess created all in Union with Her masculine partner or consort rather than a God creating all by just his own hand.
Some cultures have retained this or similar understandings and continue to honor women accordingly. Most have not. In our western culture, through the shift from the partnership oriented culture of our ancient ancestors to a dominator oriented culture, the honoring of Feminine Mysteries has all but disappeared. The blood from our flows, once offered as a sacred honoring to the fields which provided life in celebration of our womanhood was replaced with the ashes of our bones, burned at inquisition. Even today, those of us who have drawn aspects of these mysteries forward through time are still often misunderstood and some are still persecuted. Lack of understanding continues to breed fear and hold “out of balance” the sacred aspects of the feminine.
This is not about “Religion”….it is about Life.
It is about the restoration of reverence for the feminine. An expression of reverence that runs so deep that no woman would feel shame or grief at the onset of her womanhood or fear of becoming invisible as she becomes the Crone.
Today, we have the ability to make tremendous energetic shifts toward the restoration of Sacred Balance, Sacred Union, and Conscious Equal Partnership. Perhaps the first step is to individually reclaim the understanding that our physical body is The Temple of The Goddess. She does not live out there somewhere she lives and breathes and flows through us. When we embrace the human experience of womanly existence in this way, we reconnect Sacred with Feminine. This re-connection brings us to a place where we can begin to restore balance with the true and positive aspects of the Sacred Masculine.
Our personal stories reveal that most of us are the daughters of mothers who did not understand how to honor the Goddess within. And many of us are mothers of daughters who do not understand. Reclamation, through the re-introduction of the Feminine Mysteries and the return to ceremonially honoring the Rites of Passage for women repairs a tremendous energetic fissure in the fabric of our existence. We not only reach back and reconnect with that which has been lost…we pass it forward to our daughters to be woven into the lives of their daughters from the moment of conception. What better image of a quantum leap forward for all of human kind?
